What is SEIRS
What is SEIRS
Since 2001, SEMA has operated the Storage Equipment Installers Registration Scheme or SEIRS. The nationally run programme aims to raise safety standards for pallet racking installers by providing the storage industry with a ‘safety passport’. This unique initiative addresses the health and safety needs of the industry. Alongside being recognised as a best-practice example of the industry regulating itself.
SEIRS is based on three key components: an installation Code of Practice, training courses and an ID card and registration system. From erecting a structure through to working safely at height, utilisation of appropriate site plants, to supervising and managing teams, the SEIRS courses build into a complete safety training programme.
Developed by experts who know the storage industry, SEIRS offers five RoSPA-approved courses which build a solid foundation for pallet racking installers. As the established safety training programme for installers of storage equipment in the UK, SEIRS is the recognised route to a Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) card for racking installations.
Training forms a central part of SEIRS. To achieve a full SEIRS card, pallet racking installers must attend the SEIRS Foundation and SEIRS Diploma courses. The Foundation course is an introduction to installations and covers generic and industry-specific health and safety issues that affect racking. At the end of the course, the installer receives a SEIRS Trainee card which is valid for six months. This period enables the trainee to develop and enhance their skill sets on sites while under supervision.
The SEIRS Diploma course is an intensive two-day course that includes a mixture of classroom-based theory and, in a first for the industry, a significant practical element. This course has been designed to be rigorous and challenging. The pallet racking installers are only awarded their SEIRS card once they have passed an assessed part of the course. The card is valid for five years.
To ensure pallet racking installers maintain high standards they must attend a SEIRS General Refresher course before their card expires. The course will update the installer on the latest industry regulations and refresh their Health and Safety knowledge. Warehouse owners and site officials can verify the validity of a person’s card by contacting SEMA.
We also offer two higher SEIRS courses for Installation Supervisors and Installation Managers.
