Why Work With a SEMA Member

Why Work With a SEMA Member

A SEMA Member can ensure you meet your legal duty. Did you know that as a company you must ensure that any pallet racking installed in their warehouse is serviceable, fit for purpose and has been certified by a competent person?

The responsibility for storing hundreds of tonnes of pallets above working colleagues’ heads is a serious one. If an accident does happen and you fail in your duties, there are harsh penalties.

Employers must adhere to the following regulations and guidance:

  • Under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, employers have a duty to ensure that all operators, both new and existing, receive adequate training and are competent.

  • PUWER requires regular maintenance of all work equipment according to the manufacturer’s recommendations to ensure your warehouse meets all health and safety legislative requirements.

  • HSG76 Warehousing and Storage covers all aspects of racking, including manual and mechanical handling, site transport and working at height. It emphasises best practices and risk prevention.

  • SEMA Codes ensure racking products are designed, installed, maintained, and repaired to meet quality and safety standards. SEMA’s technical publications and Design Codes are widely recognized in the industry.

SEMA’s Members are interrelated to support employers and warehouse operatives every step of the way.

Pallet Racking Safety

Racking collapse and subsequent potential prosecution are simple to avoid where there is a safety culture and correct protocols for inspection, maintenance and repair exist. SEMA works closely with the HSE, we regard “recognised standards” as those which we have established as best practice and are enshrined in SEMA’s Codes of Practice and Guidelines. SEMA Members are in the best position to provide advice in a fast-moving manufacturing environment.

Preventive Maintenance

Rack safety inspections are required to minimise accidents, comply with the requirements of PUWER 1998, and promote safety in the workplace. SEMA supports a rigorous approach to rack inspections. This checks the condition of the equipment, identifies repair work, ensures it complies with legal requirements, and verifies the equipment has been installed correctly. Warehouse Managers should conduct three levels of inspection: immediate (daily), regular (weekly), and expert (annual) inspections. SEMA Approved Racking Inspectors or trained specialists should carry these out.
