There are generally four basic reasons for requiring inspections :

(i) a regular audit to check the condition of equipment for health and safety purposes.

(ii) a means of assessing. the amount of work to be done for a contract of repair.

(iii) a means of assessing the structural safety of equipment following an accident.

(iv) To verify that the equipment has been designed and built to a particular specification.

The guidance given in this document applies equally whatever the source of the initiative for carrying out an inspection.
