Codes of Practice

BITA/SEMA Guidance Note on Truck/Racking Interfaces

Price: £38.00

The guidelines in this manual are intended to apply to most internal storage installations involving the use of industrial lift trucks, including automated and semi-automated trucks.

The success of any storage installation will be largely dependent on the compatibility of the various interlacing elements involved. This document sets out guidelines to enable potential users to establish the key parameters which are essential to achieving success.

Code of Practice for the Design and Use of Cantilever Racking Systems

Price: £38.00

The purpose of the code is to provide information on systems manufactured from either hot rolled structural steel sections or cold formed members. It also gives guidelines on safe loading, design criteria, testing and installation.

Code of Practice for the Design of High Rise Static Steel Shelving

Price: £22.00

This code refers to hand loaded shelving which by virtue of its height, or the difficulty of proving the design by type testing, is not covered by the Code of Practice for the Design of Low Rise Static Steel Shelving. It applies to hand loaded shelving in single tier construction made from cold formed or hot rolled steel with bolted and adjustable shelving where order picking equipment may be used to carry out input/output operations.

Code of Practice for the Design of Low Rise Static Steel Shelving

Price: £22.00

This code of practice refers to hand loaded shelving made generally from cold or hot formed steel. The application is restricted to installations less than 3600mm high with height/depth ratios not exceeding 6:1. It applies to hand loaded shelving in single tier construction made from cold formed or hot rolled steel with bolted and adjustable shelving and also covers :-

a) the use of cold formed, thin gauge multiple holed sections which are common to the industry today and for which there are no alternative national standards which are totally applicable; and

b) and the use of proprietary components etc., to transmit forces between shelves and uprights.

Code of Practice for the Design of Mobile Racking Systems

Price: £38.00

This code provides information on mobile pallet racking systems made from cold formed or hot rolled steel structural sections and associated equipment to ensure the best use of the equipment is achieved.

Code of Practice for the Design of Mobile Shelving Systems

Price: £38.00

The purpose of this code is to provide information on mobile shelving systems made from cold formed or hot rolled steel structural or aluminium sections together with associated equipment to ensure the best use of the available storage space.

Code of Practice for the Design of Static Racking

Price: £38.00

This code of practice has been introduced primarily to regulate static structures which are designed partly on an experimental basis for :-

a) the use of cold formed, thin gauge multiple holed sections which are common to the industry today and for which there are no alternative national standards which are totally applicable;

b) the use of semi rigid hook or stud type connections to transfer load between beams and uprights and to maintain stability.

Code of Practice for the Use of Static Pallet Racking

Price: £38.00

The purpose of this code is to provide information for users of pallet-racks, drive-in and drive--through racks made from cold formed or hot rolled steel structural members and associated equipment to ensure that the best use of the equipment is achieved and that the recognised elements of safety are maintained. Quality and type of pallets and mechanical equipment used to load and off-load the racking system is also covered.

Guide to Industrial Shelving Using Chipboard

Price: £28.00

It has been common practice for many years now in the storage and materials handling industry to use all types of chipboard as shelving. BS 5268: Part 2 'Structural Use of Timber' gives design recommendations for type C5 chipboard only.

SEMA therefore recommend the following method of arriving at shelving safe load data for the other (more common) types of chipboard in BS 5669: Part 2 'Specifications of Wood Chipboard'.

Guide to Method Statements for the Installation of Storage Equipment

Price: £60.00

This document is a guide to the considerations that must be made for the installation of racking and shelving systems. The guide is in three sections.

The first section gives outline information on health and safety legislation applicable to installation work, general guidance on equipment that will be used during the work, site management and training.

The second and third sections give guidance on good practice within the industry for installation of racking and shelving systems.

Guide to the Specification of Mezzanine Floors

Price: £38.00

This guideline covers steel framed structures using various decking materials. The structures may be independent of the building and are usually designed as free standing structures supported by the existing concrete floor slab.

Guideline No 1 - Guide to the Building Regulations

Price: £6.00

This guideline is intended. to assist all parties to conform to current legislation relating to the erection and installation within the United Kingdom of Raised Storage Platforms, floors or structures supporting floors. The information refers particularly to structures where the supporting members are manufactured from thin walled, cold rolled sections with multiple holes and those manufactured from hot rolled steel sections.

Guideline No 2 - Guide to Erection Tolerances for Static Racking

Price: £11.00

These recommendations are based on SEMA Members' general manufacturing experience in dealing with the tolerance requirements (measured prior to loading) of a variety of rack installation types used in conjunction with various kinds of unit handling equipment.

Guideline No 3 - Guide to Industrial Suspended Floors Using Chipboards

Price: £11.00

It has been common practice for a. number of years now in the storage and materials handling industry to use chipboard as a walkway between multi-tier racks and as a decking on rack platforms and the like. This guideline, which is based on Swedish and Norwegian methods of use for structural chipboard, is the basis of the SEMA guideline for the design of floor decking.

Guideline No 4 - Guide to the Specification of Freestanding High Bay Racking and Clad Racks

Price: £22.00

The purpose of this document is to enable potential users of freestanding high bay or clad racks to appreciate the planning and design aspects which contribute to the successful specification of a system appropriate to their particular needs.

The design and use of sophisticated machinery associated with high bay racking, introduce factors into the specifying of such installations which if not identified early in the process can result in failure to achieve the desired utility, excessive damage and unnecessary costs.

Guideline No 5 - Guide to the Design and Installation of Mobile Shelving

Price: £11.00

This guideline applies to hand loaded mobile shelving where the shelving is designed in accordance with the SEMA Code of Practice for Low Rise Static Shelving. Mobile shelving can be hand operated, mechanically assisted or power operated.

Guideline No 6 - Guide to the Conduct of Pallet Racking and Shelving Surveys

Price: £38.00

There are generally four basic reasons for requiring surveys :

(i) a regular audit to check the condition of equipment for health and safety purposes.

(ii) a means of assessing. the amount of work to be done for a contract of repair.

(iii) a means of assessing the structural safety of equipment following an accident.

(iv) To verify that the equipment has been designed and built to a particular specification.

The guidance given in this document applies equally whatever the source of the initiative for carrying out a survey.

Load Notices

Price: £58.00

This document is aimed at specifiers, designers and suppliers as well as users of storage systems.

It is intended to provide guidance on hte correct provision of load notice information to ensure that all the recognised elements of safety are maintained for the loading and operation of the storage system.

It consists of 13 colour plates representing load notice layouts for different types of storage systems rangin from adjustable pallet racking, through to shelving, live storage, cantilever and mezzanine systems.

Terms and Descriptions of Storage Equipment
